Most people with BIID have tried many kinds of therapy and report that it does not work. There is no effective treatment, aside from acquiring the desired disability. It's not the kind of thing you can just talk yourself out of or change your mind about. Maybe once neuroscience has progressed further there will be some kind of treatment that involves tinkering with the brain itself, but that is a long way off.
The point isn't to pity people with BIID or love them. All of you who hate the idea or just can't be ok with it are welcome to your opinions. I'm not actually trying to change your mind about that. I'm just trying to clear up the ignorance and misconceptions.
While the experience of being a dev and of having BIID are very different, I agree with Ath. Many of the nasty comments we get are exactly the same: that we are cheapening or mocking real disability, if we really knew what it was like we wouldn't like it so much, how can you think something so negative is a positive in any way, etc. I wouldn't go so far as to say that if you're not ok with BIID you're not ok with devs, but I do sympathize when I see them receiving the same kind of hate we get.
Pretenders also get a lot of hate on this board because there have been incidents of predatory liars and "catfishing." If this happens to you, please tell the moderators. However, back when I was single, I would have been happy to date a pretender IF he was honest and upfront about it from the start. I know of a few other devs who have. It always seemed like a win-win to me.

I wanna hear more about this 'dark side.' I'm a little lost on what this means exactly...

Wow never thought of pretenders tricking devs. Can see how it could work out if they come clean.

There are a million old threads about the dark side. The darkest ones are from before when the majority of our members were PWDs.

There are a million old threads about the dark side. The darkest ones are from before when the majority of our members were PWDs. Pwd had the majority? I thought/felt that it was tipping towards Pwd no now? I am stuck on the crap hospital wifi, but I remember one of those threads. Maybe I can find it and link it here. I thought it had already tipped...

I want to be a T12 para too! Hey Tony, do you want to be a T12 para? Why do people with BIID seem to always pick the coolest disabilities? Maybe I haven't been looking, but I can't recall anyone wanting to be a c5 quad.

I think there are some dark side links in the "best threads of pd" thread
and I think thst comparing devs to liking blondes is, again, a simplification if not a mistake...

I thought it had already tipped... Yeah I guess after the last newbie flare up it did tip over. What a shame. Edit: I think you ladies are here but not actively posting outside the devs only section. Let me clarify... I thought it had tipped a long while back.

Noone touched the question "how can you be ok with devs liking it" If you cant be ok with other people wanting it. I think most wheelers view people with BIID as 'imitating' a disability, rather than 'wanting' a disability. And in contrast, I think they view devs as 'admiring' a disability. All three-imitation, wanting, admiring- are very different. Imitation is not always a good thing, or always flattering. So I dont think it is a contradiction for a wheeler to be okay with devs liking their body, while also opposing a person with BIID wanting to become disabled. Looking at all the reasons posted in this thread for not being welcoming to those with BIID. . .not a single one applies to devs. I dont think you need worry about it too much. I think some of the more deceptive guys with BIID put a bad taste in our mouth. Everyone remember the guy named "ampwheeler" who was neither an amp nor a wheeler? that guy can go to hell. ...But props to you Ath for starting this discussion. I had to think about it for a bit.

The "who are you" poll shows there are slightly more devs than pwds.
Yes I suppose you have a point fuzzy. I wasnt really sure how I felt earlier, never having discussed it with someone with biid.

Because there are way, way, way more PWDs in the world than devs, and also because there are still more men on the internet than women, at least among those who seek out a dev website. We do get tons of lurkers, around 300-400 a day. Some of them eventually join, but a lot don't.
