Hi everyone. I just did a test comment and it went through no problem. What exactly is the issue you're having, Valkyrja? I know the captchas that you have to type are kind of a pain, but if I get rid of them, I'm betting there will be dozens of spam comments daily.

I agree with Devogirl on this. As she said, there are tons of forums for disability, and if you want a place to talk without devs, it seems like it would make sense to use any one of those numerous forums instead and you'd have more privacy. I know you guys love the forum to death and are loath to go anywhere else, but I think it's good to branch out a bit!
Frankly, I think the only reason to have a disabled-only section here would be so the devs could easily spy on what wheelers are saying about us.

Because the moderators are all primarily English-speaking, we ask that all conversations be held in English on this board so that we can effectively moderate.
If someone makes a statement in another language that is reported by another user, we cannot fairly tell if it's offensive if we don't speak that language.
A sentence here or there is fine. But large paragraphs in other languages are not. In the future, this will warrant a warning.
You are welcome to PM or exchange emails with other members in whatever language you wish.

I agree with Devogirl. If you want to specifically use the Paradevo name and link it to this site, please get our permission in advance. But we appreciate you making a new resource for members.

I for one think that what Ruth is doing is awesome. How many books have you read where the author is completely inaccurate regarding some disability a character has? This book/article/whatever has the potential to really help people.
Saying that Ruth is doing this to get off on it is completely ridiculous and insulting to her. Ruth is the most honest person out there when it comes to her dev feelings. You already know she's a dev. If she were interested in getting all this technical information in order to get off it, all she'd probably have to do is say to a single guy on this board, "Tell me about your disability because I think it's hot." And they'd do it.
If you don't like the project, that's fine. Don't participate. But please don't attack Ruth personally by calling her a liar.

Anyone who acted inappropriately like that would be immediately banned from this website. This is nothing new.

I really dislike the comparison she makes between a dev posting her photo and a pedophile posting a photo of someone's kids to jack off to. That's a very unfair comparison. There are constantly stories about men who post naked photos of their attractive girlfriends online without their permission. This is again something that creepy men do, but women very rarely do. Is that an appropriate thing to do? Hell no. But because a few men do it, does that mean ALL MEN are creeps? Well, maybe it does to some women.
But for her to compare posting a sexualized photo of a disabled woman to posting a sexualized photo of a child is an indication that she has trouble finding herself sexy. Having sex with a child is WRONG, no matter how you look at it. Having sex with a physically disabled person is perfectly fine, as long as they consent.
I find it incredibly naive when disabled women get angry at devs because they want someone to like them for themselves only. Most men ask out women based on their five-minute impression of them, not any deep connection--that comes later. Appearances matter! To both genders! So maybe some guy will ask her out because he thinks she has... I don't know, nice tits. Is being attracted to two big balls of fat on her chest really so much better than asking her out because they think her disability is sexy?
That's probably part of why disabled men don't mind as much. Because men understand that initial attraction is largely about appearance. And like I said, women are less creepy about things in general, so there's less reason to be afraid.

Male devs are just creepier. It had to be said. Sue me. Let's be real here. It's not so much that male devs are creepier than female devs. It's that men are creepier than women. I think you ladies are great and I'm glad you're here. But if this site were frequented by majority of gay male devs, things would be really different here. Nobody would be going on and on analyzing feelings or having book clubs. That is chick stuff. Men are more visual when it comes to getting sexually turned on. And that causes some men to do really stupid things to obtain images to turn them on.

So far, it hasn't been a big deal. There aren't that many anonymous comments, and so far they've all been short and positive. It takes me about thirty seconds total.
Ruth: Do you feel the same as Jane that negative but non-trolly comments should get through? You've gotten a couple in the past that I might have felt obliged to moderate.

As I said, I'll let you guys decide, but just a thought:
If you have a single email address, you can just log in when you have time and "claim" stories by replying to the request. That way, you won't end up editing a story you hate and you won't have to edit if you don't have time.
The only problem arises if nobody wants to edit a particular story. But this seems like an enthusiastic group.

I'll let Eleanore or Ximena take the lead on this. You can decide who you want to be an editor and create the email.

We need to organize the beta readers, otherwise the first email address on the list is likely to get all the emails.
One idea is that you could split it up by "interests"... for example, if Ximena wanted to do stories about paras and Eleanore stories about legbraces.
Alternately, you can create a single email address that you can "share" and claim stories that interest you.
I'll let you guys hash out how you want to do it.

Jane: Would you email me or PM me the name of the author that you feel is being offensive to devs? (and why?)
Just to give you a little history here...
I have never, ever rejected a story based on quality. In the olden days, when there were very few submissions, I would actually go through every submission myself and fix the grammar. I hated it, but I did it to make the stories more enjoyable for everyone.
Frankly, I got a lot of submissions that were total sh*t, and eventually, as I got busier, I stopped bothering to fix them. The stories I thought were horribly written still got tons and tons of positive comments, so I figured the standards were not very high. It's actually a relief that people are posting on their own now, so I don't have to feel responsible for posting stuff that's poorly written.
Now that we have more submissions, there is a temptation to reject things that are not high quality. But I know there are still people out there who enjoy these stories, and I don't want to be a grammar nazi. And I'm already acting like an asshole trying to get people to post correctly.
Maybe we can have a list of authors who can make themselves available to new writers to help them make their writing more readable. Anyone like to volunteer?

Eleanore: I didn't think that comment was trolling either. It wasn't expressed rudely or as a personal attack.
This is why moderation may be tricky... I feel, to some extent, that you are all adults (I hope!) and can handle a couple of negative comments. Explicit trolling such as on Sean's story should not be allowed, but I feel like negative opinions should be okay.
