It may be worth noting that the BBC Ouch Podcast had a followup. It is a disability-focused talkshow they hold once a week.

yeah...I don't think clean up means what you think it means in that context mate...
haha that cracked article was awesome, and really does capture the issues around being into truly weird shit.

Oh good! so no horrible stains or floral shirts for me in a law office then. That's a relief!

Re the discussion of clothing above - yes it matters. I have gotten help from male colleagues and other close friends when picking. To be blunt though, I tend to have a set of things which go together in any given combination. I have about 10 shirts, 4 ties, 4 jackets, etc, and I know that any combination of those will work comparatively well, though they are slightly different...I think blue and gray and etc so that combinations will still fit together. But if I know I have a specific client meeting or event where I need to be particularly well-coordinated, I know what combination will do that because someone has said to me before to use this specific one. A certain dev on here will be able to attest to this thanks to an IPhone cam...
As for speech...yep, we move pretty quick. I don't know many VIs who use speech who don't have it cranked up. There have actually been some psychological studies on how it works and what parts of our brains have been co-opted for processing at that speed. It is quite interesting.

man, some of these answers also serve to highlight how different blind guys are from one another...this is obviously, but too many presume that we are all one entity due to blindness. For example, i like tiny girls, long hair, more delicate of build...complete opposite from BG above. Although I do think we'll agree that long hair is an instant plus. For me, speak well, have a nice voice, prove yourself with your words. I don't know how you dress/what you look like, but often, the voice is a reflection of those things. If you have a good vocabulary, a good accent and take care with your words, i will draw conclusions favourable to you. Incidentally...answering a question not meant for you...yes, yes, yes! This is the worst and it happens sometimes. I have accidentally snubbed people before because of this, not knowing they were asking/saying hi to me specifically. Or the worst one, getting someone's name wrong! "Oh hi Amy!" "It's actually not amy..." oops!

haha I love that intro dude. Blind guys represent, there are not too many of us on here I think. Now let's not get everyone thinking that all blind guys play guitar but the two in this thread do, though very different styles! Me

Hi all This came out of a discussion i was having with a blindness dev, who found a few blog posts I linked to recently quite interesting, from a dev POV. I thought I would post here links to a few blindness-focused blogs, for those who may find such things interesting. t.co/Gc6BIF4oVcwheresyourdog.wordpress.comwheresyourdog.wordpress.comenjoy . Me

For the laptop/desktop, its a headless desktop with an old third gen I5 and an ssd...god I love those damn things. Of course I have no need for a graphics card lol as I don't even use a screen. My desktop is stuck in the back of a cupboard somewhere and I operate it using wireless keyboard and headphones. As for mobile though, apple is the way tot go, as IOS is accessible with screen reading, whereas Android's attempt to integrate screenreader support sucks.

Hi This one is true. Not my story but that of a friend of mine. Both girls in this are partially-sighted...unfortunately, my friend had very good daytime vision but was nightblind, whilst her gf could still see reasonably well, even in darkness. My friend was being guided, at speed, through a city by her gf. Alcohol may have been involved. Unfortunately, her gf did not move fast enough to avoid my friend slamming into a lamppost headfirst. The angle and force of the blow happened to be perfect to completely destroy the rest of her vision...something got detached or something. Not sure of the biological reasoning. Long story short, my friend's gf destroyed her vision by way of a lamppost...they're um...not together any more. Me
